Violence and hate crimes against LGBTQ individuals have been well documented and studied as it relates to attacks, rape, and public shaming. However, we will focus our attention specifically on the violence that occurs privately, often unnoticed and unreported, within the family. During this presentation I will share stories of my experiences with LGBTQ individuals abused by immediate and extended family because of their sexual orientation, sexuality, and expressions of self found unacceptable to the family. Participants will leave with a better understanding of why some abuse of LGBTQ individuals is not reported, be able to identify various types of abuse used to shame one’s sexual orientation and sexuality, and take away coping strategies and techniques to assist members of the LGBTQ community in healing from trauma associated with family violence.
